Saphora Hair, Nails and Day Spa pivots with the times

Roxanne Pearman’s new day spa is an endeavour born purely out of the pandemic.

The owner of Saphora Hair, Nails and Day Spa had to get creative after the global health crisis ravaged the beauty industry.

“I think our industry was the hardest hit by the pandemic,” she said. “During lockdown we could not exactly do hair and nails via Zoom,” she said.

And once restrictions lifted some clients did not immediately feel comfortable going back to the salon, or continued to work from home for several months.

“After the lockdown we needed to go in another direction,” Ms Pearman said.

They used some of their Covid-19 downtime to renovate their facility at 33 Ewing Street to include two spa rooms, a full bathroom and shower.

“It is really tranquil now,” she said. “It is a Zen space.”

They have just hired massage therapists Damion Henry and Venice Neith-Wilson, who were previously at the Willowstream Spa at the Fairmont Southampton.

“Damion has over 15 years of experience with deep tissue and sports massage,” Ms Pearman said. “He incorporates a lot of stretching with his massages.”

Ms Neith-Wilson has two decades of experience and is trained in oncology massage.

“She can help with cancer treatment side-effects,” Ms Pearman said. “The benefits of that are phenomenal for the client. It helps with the stress and anxiety of getting cancer treatment — the chronic pain, poor sleeping and the headaches.”

Their massage services are mobile so they can take them right into businesses to offer corporate massage, or go into homes and offer bedside massages to people who are unwell.

Their new day spa also gives luxury treatments such as scrubs, massages and wraps. They have found their detox wraps are particularly popular in the new year, so they will be offering a discount on those.

“I wanted to make Saphora a one-stop shop for beauty,” she said. “People can come in and get their hair and nails done. Soon we will be adding waxing, facials and eyebrow threading. We also have specials we have been offering, such as $20 off any spa treatment. Our services were already fairly priced but we also now offer special packages. If you want to pay for six treatments up front, for example, we will offer $50 off of that.”

They will also be rolling out a Saphora Spa members’ club next year.

Now that Saphora is busy again, Ms Pearman is looking to hire more nail technicians.
