BEDC looking for more places to get cooking

The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation is seeking licensed commercial kitchen owners interested in renting its kitchen space during off-hours, as part of their Underutilised Commercial Kitchens programme.

The project connects underused, Department of Health-approved kitchen facilities with vetted community users such as bakers, caterers, and other food entrepreneurs who require flexible access to commercial-grade kitchen space.

A BEDC spokesman said that kitchen owners participating in the programmes could generate additional income while directly supporting the growth of Bermuda’s food-based small businesses.

“We recognise that many kitchens across the island sit idle for several hours a day,” said William Spriggs, BEDC director of economic and co-operative development.

“This presents a win-win opportunity. Kitchen owners can monetise their unused time and, at the same time, we are reducing the barriers to entry for entrepreneurs who need access to affordable, licensed kitchen space.”

Mr Spriggs called it a practical solution supporting economic development at the community level.

The BEDC will play a project management role, facilitating connections, managing expectations and ensuring that both kitchen owners and users benefit from a structured, reliable partnership.

The goal is to foster a stronger ecosystem for culinary entrepreneurs while creating new revenue opportunities for existing businesses.

The BEDC launched the programme in early 2023.

Jamillah Lodge, the BEDC director of communication and development, said the organisation regularly received requests from aspiring culinary entrepreneurs seeking information about the availability of commercial kitchens for their ventures.

“With all the requests we received, we realised there was an opportunity to support small businesses looking for space,” she said. “We know there are underutilised kitchens around the island in churches and community clubs.”
