Retail sales remain soft
Bermuda’s overall retail sales volume decreased by 0.2 per cent in January, compared to the same period last year, according to the latest Retail Sales Index figures from the Department of Statistics.
Retail sales value increased to an estimated $101.8 million, a 2 per cent rise.
Five of the seven industry sectors recorded year-to-year sales volume and value index decreases at the beginning of the year.
Food and liquor were the only areas to see growth, with grocery store sales volume growing by 12.7 per cent, and sales value growing by 15.1 per cent. Liquor stores sales increased by 4.7 per cent, while sales value went up by 7 per cent.
Hardware stores experienced the biggest drops, with a decrease of 14.5 per cent in volume, and a decrease of 13.7 per cent in value.
In January, car showrooms saw sales volume fall by 12.7 per cent. Sales value also fell by 11.6 per cent.
Service station sales volume decreased 7 per cent in value and 6.9 per cent in volume. It was a similar picture for apparel stores which had a 6.5 per cent dip in sales volume, and a 4.7 per cent decline in value.
Gross sales receipts for furniture stores also fell by 38.5 per cent.
Overall overseas declarations increased by 5.4 per cent compared to January 2024.
Excluding Sundays, there were 27 shopping days, one more than January 2024.
