St George dress shop Boho Couture expands

When Roberta Munden and Jane Roberts opened Boho Couture, a dress shop in the heart of St George, there were many sceptics.

“We had so many people say, ‘why would you open there?’ ” Ms Munden said. “They said nobody goes to St George.”

There was so much negativity that she signed a one-year lease, giving herself an out if things did not work out.

A year later, the King’s Square shop selling Italian linen clothing and accessories has done so well that she has more than doubled her space to 16,000 square feet.

“The shop next door to Boho Couture was empty for so long,” she said. “We put in an application for it and were accepted. We opened up the wall between the two stores, and had a soft opening on Saturday.”

Cabana by Boho offers unique furniture and home accents.

“We have tables and chairs from Bali,” she said. “One of them is a really gorgeous rubber wood and marble table. Another table uses petrified wood. We also have really cool rattan mirrors and a large teak mirror.”

She decided there was a market for furniture after hearing clients say they loved the boho styles so much they were redoing their whole house in it.

Right now, most of the furniture at Cabana by Boho is from Bali, but every shipment will be different. Her plan is to evolve with the space.

“If the furniture does not work out, we will do something different,” she said. “We may expand more into clothing, now that we are also bringing clothing in from Greece and Turkey.”

Going into furniture felt natural for Ms Munden. Years ago, she ran a shop called London Loft, selling clothing and furniture in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Locals are the target demographic for Cabana by Boho. Seventy per cent of her dress shop clients are also from the island.

“We have people come from all over Bermuda,” she said. “We get people who come from Somerset to get lunch in St George.”

She is also seeing clients from many of the hotels in the East End, and some from farther out.

Things do get quiet in St George in the winter when the tourists are scarce, but she and Ms Roberts have found ways to cope.

“We did shorter hours in January and February,” she said. “Ultimately, things get quieter after Christmas no matter what business you are in. Nobody has any money early in the year.”

Now, as the summer tourism season gets under way, things seem to be going well.

“We have had so many cruise ship passengers,” she said. “We are also seeing people from nearby hotels such as St Regis, Grotto Bay and the St George’s Club, but also people from farther afield such as The Reefs and Azura.”
