Seventeen high school girls from across Bermuda marked the end of a week of career preparation and inspiration as on July 4, as they completed She Leads, a “real-world readiness programme”. The initiative, led by Bermuda High School and sponsored by HSBC, brought together students from BHS, The Berkeley Institute and Warwick Academy for a week of workshops, mentorship and growth.

Nyah Roberts, a BHS student in year 11, said she “really enjoyed the WeSpeak boot camp,” which helped her find confidence and her voice. She also attended “Building Your Resilience Toolbox,” a workshop by Rishée Paschal, Tana Matthie and Beatriz Aguiar from the Family Centre.

Ms Roberts added: “Ms Matthie, Ms Paschal and Ms Aguiar from the Family Centre were very insightful, and it’s a lesson I will carry throughout my life.”

Warwick Academy’s Nh’Lae DeRoza said: “I was a little shaky at the start of the programme, but my confidence grew throughout the week. I made some great friends and really enjoyed myself.”

“She Leads provides girls with a great opportunity to be exposed to what real female leadership and empowerment looks like,” said Christyn Simons, the programme co-ordinator. “The goal is for this to have been an investment in not only their individual futures, but in the future of women in leadership.”

Carol Swainson, head of school at BHS, added: “From yoga to friendship, they learnt concrete strategies to use when faced with decisions, rejection and life’s hurdles.”

HSBC’s Judy Doidge said: “This programme bridges the gap between the classroom and real-world experience … we are encouraged to see the next generation find their confidence, their voice and be empowered.”
