Bacardi cultivates community in Bermuda for 60 years

Guests invited inside Bacardi’s iconic Pitts Bay Road headquarters can glimpse the company’s greener side and celebrate 60 years on the island through sustainability initiatives that blend innovation, community and history.

At the centre of the tour stand Bacardi’s signature aeroponics tower gardens, where herbs and vegetables grow using minimal water.

Danielle Paynter, the director of corporate affairs, who leads the garden-club initiative, explained: “If we could inspire people about how to grow food sustainably in smaller spaces, that was just something we hoped could inspire other corporations or individuals.”

Near by, solar panels now generate 75 per cent of the building’s energy needs, while single-use plastics have been banished — symbolising a green revolution at corporate scale.

Vernon Pemberton, brand ambassador, highlighted the broader community bond: “After 60 years, almost everyone can say, ‘Oh, I have an experience with our brands or Bacardi.’”

Another highlight of the visit is learning about “Shake Your Future”, a hospitality training scheme for unemployed locals — another way Bacardi “nurtures people as well as plants”, Ms Paynter said.

This comes as Bacardi marks its 60th anniversary in Bermuda. In a high-profile environmental gesture, staff volunteers planted 60 native trees on Trunk Island this summer in partnership with the Bermuda Zoological Society, complementing last year’s planting of 100 cedar trees at Riddell’s Bay for the company’s global anniversary.

Douglas Mello, Bacardi’s local managing director, said the tree-planting was “a living tribute to the strong roots Bacardi has planted in Bermuda”.

The company’s headquarters is already famous for its award-winning 1862 Cocktail Bar with its display of more than 200 Bacardi products and its striking ceiling constellation. This year, the company unveiled its brand-new lobby featuring a 40-foot-long by 20-foot-high illuminated installation showcasing Bacardi’s best-known global brands.

Bacardi will host a pop-up tasting event on HQ’s front lawn on Thursday from noon to 2pm, during which consumers can taste the recently launched Cazadores RTDs
