Polaris Holding Company Ltd has provided support to three Bermudian students as they pursue their educational goals with the Polaris Holding Company Ltd Education Awards.

The recipient-students are the children of staff members of the various Polaris companies.

Zyon Minors, Ayr Cannonier and Shanae Harvey received Polaris Education Awards this year, which included $2,500.

Children of employees from Polaris or its subsidiary companies are eligible for the award and funds can go towards their tuition, airfare or room and board.

Subsidiary companies include Stevedoring Services Ltd, Duck’s Puddle Properties Ltd and Surface Experts Ltd.

Ms Minors is pursuing a degree in nursing at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and received the award for the fourth and final time.

Her father Otis Minors, docks superintendent for Stevedoring Services, has worked with the organisation for more than two decades.

Ms Minors explained: “I’ve grown-up knowing the company and I’m grateful that they have supported me for the duration of my studies.”

Mr Cannonier, whose father Ankoma Cannonier also works for Stevedoring Services, will use funding, which he also received last year, to pursue a degree in economics at the University of East London.

He said: “I had the incredible opportunity to study at [United World College] in Tanzania last year with the help of the Polaris Education Award.

“This year, I’m excited to start university in the UK and I will continue to strive for excellence.”

Ms Harvey, whose mother Nievah Harvey is operations manager at Surface Experts, is a first-time PHCLEA recipient enrolled in the Bermuda College associates of arts and design programme.

She said: “This award will cover most of my Bermuda College tuition for the year. I am grateful to be able to focus on my studies with less financial pressure.”

Cheryl Hayward-Chew, Polaris chairwoman, presented the awards to the students.

She explained: “We are honoured to give back to our team by providing financial support for their children to attain further education. It is rewarding to see Zyon and Ayr continuing to do well in their studies, and we are happy to offer this award to Shanae for the first time.”
