Appleby awards $90,000 in scholarships and bursaries
Appleby Bermuda’s annual provision for scholarships and bursaries will total $90,000 this year as successful candidates get assistance in educational funding.
The law firm has been providing scholarships and bursaries since 1977 to qualified Bermudian applicants based on academic performance, community involvement and extracurricular activities.
This year’s recipients are Kyla Lowe, Camya Matthew, Thomas Evans, Yahzahra Gilbert and Glenn Simmons.
The Appleby Legal Education Scholarship is an annual scholarship (with the possibility for renewal for a second year) for a Bermudian student studying law who plans to return to Bermuda to practice. Valued at $30,000, this year it is awarded to Kyla Lowe, who is pursuing a legal practice certificate at University of Law.
The Appleby/Berkeley Institute Scholarship is an annual scholarship (with the possibility for renewal for a second year) for current graduating students of The Berkeley Institute. This year’s Appleby/Berkeley Institute Scholarship (valued at $20,000) is awarded to Camya Matthew who is pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration, majoring in Management with focus in Human Resources at Howard University.
Thomas Evans, Yahzahra Gilbert and Glenn Simmons have been awarded Appleby’s Legal Education annual bursaries, with a total value of $40,000 for Bermudian students studying at university and who intend to return to Bermuda.
Mr Evans recently completed a Bachelor of Laws degree at University of Lancaster and will be commencing a Masters of Laws and the Solicitors Qualifying Examination at University of Law. He is also a 2022 and 2023 Legal Education Bursary recipient.
Ms Gilbert is completing Bachelor of Laws degree at University of Buckingham.
Mr Simmons is completing an LLM and the SQE at BPP University Law School.
The scholarship and bursary recipients also have the opportunity to apply for summer and winter internships to gain work experience. Ms Lowe and Mr Evans are 2025 summer interns, the latter having also interned in 2023.
