The Regulatory Authority of Bermuda has appointed Jessica Mello and Dennis Pimentel to its board of commissioners.

The RA, which regulates electricity, electronic communications, submarine cables and fuels, said the appointments would support its mandate to safeguard essential services, promote innovation and protect consumer interests.

Mark Fields, the chairman of the board of commissioners, welcomed the additions. “Commissioners Mello and Pimentel each bring exceptional expertise and a track record of leadership in sectors vital to Bermuda’s future,” he said.

Richard Ambrosio, the chief executive of the RA, added: “We are delighted to welcome the two commissioners to the board. Their deep subject-matter expertise in infrastructure and energy will be invaluable as the RA navigates the challenges ahead and works to deliver on its statutory objectives for the benefit of Bermuda’s consumers and economy.”

Ms Mello, an economist with more than 25 years’ global experience, most recently served as head of tourism for the Red Sea Zone Authority in Saudi Arabia, overseeing development of a 28,000sq km eco-tourism project powered entirely by renewable energy. Her past work includes major projects such as Dubai’s Palm Islands and the LF Wade International Airport redevelopment.

Mr Pimentel brings more than three decades in Bermuda’s electricity sector, beginning as an apprentice at Belco before serving as its president from 2018 to 2021. Since then, he has worked as a consultant in energy infrastructure and governance for both the Government and private investors.

The RA is expected to expand its competition oversight beyond electronic communications to the wider economy, in line with a recent government announcement.
