Appleby welcomes three new lawyers

Appleby has expanded its Bermuda office with the addition of three lawyers, including one Bermudian, across its top-ranked dispute resolution and corporate practices.

Mike Goulborn, senior associate, and Matthew Hollis-Smith, associate, have joined the dispute resolution team, while Avechi Chimara, associate, has joined the corporate department.

Appleby is the only Bermuda law firm ranked Tier 1 by Legal 500 across all six practice categories: banking, finance and capital markets; corporate and commercial; dispute resolution; insurance and reinsurance; regulatory and compliance; and trusts and private client.

Mr Goulborn, an experienced advocate and trust practitioner, has advised on complex trust, regulatory and corporate disputes in London, Jersey and Bermuda. He was called to the Bermuda Bar in 2023.

Mr Hollis-Smith, a Bermudian, was Called to the Bar in February 2024 and has acted in a wide range of commercial litigation and insolvency matters.

“I’m delighted to welcome Mike and Matthew to our dynamic dispute resolution team,” said John Wasty, head of the practice. “Mike brings extensive international experience and is a highly regarded trust practitioner … Matthew brings a fresh perspective to the team.”

On the corporate side, Ms Chimara has experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and capital markets work, having previously practised in Toronto. She is admitted in Ontario and New York.
