Retail sales rise 0.8% in June
Retail sales in Bermuda increased modestly in June, with higher spending on motor vehicles, fuel and building materials offsetting weaker sales of apparel and liquor.
According to the Ministry of Economy and Labour’s latest Retail Sales Index report, the overall volume of retail sales rose 0.8 per cent year-over-year, after adjusting for retail inflation measured at 1.1 per cent.
In dollar terms, the value of retail sales climbed 2 per cent to an estimated $113 million.
Five of the seven retail sectors recorded higher sales volumes compared with June 2024.
Motor vehicle stores posted the strongest growth, up 11.4 per cent year-over-year.
Service stations saw sales volume rise 6.6 per cent, building material stores increased 1.3 per cent and food stores edged up 0.2 per cent.
The all other store types category — which includes those selling household goods, appliances, electronics, pharmaceuticals and tourist-related items — gained 2.7 per cent, supported by a 25.7 per cent jump in marine supplies and 7.7 per cent growth in appliance and electronics sales.
In contrast, liquor store sales fell 2.3 per cent, and apparel store sales declined 5.5 per cent compared with the same month last year.
The report also showed that selected overseas declarations — purchases made abroad by residents — fell 16.2 per cent, driven by lower imports of furniture, carpets and antiques.
Imports by households via sea dropped $8.3 million to $10.1 million, while courier imports rose $1.8 million to $16.2 million.
There were 24 shopping days in June, the same as in June 2024.
