The Anguilla Government has signed a confidential agreement to buy seats on flights to the American East Coast on AnguillAir, a division of BermudAir.

Deal particulars have not been disclosed, but the move was made to boost tourism in Anguilla, according to the website CH Aviation.

BermudAir announced the launch of AnguillAir in June, with direct flights from Boston and Baltimore to Anguilla starting on December 19.

Like Bermuda, Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory. Located in the Caribbean, it is bigger in landmass than Bermuda, but smaller in population, about 19,000 people compared with the latter’s 64,500.

Officials from BermudAir met with members of the Anguilla Government in September.

The Anguillan newspaper reported that the meeting was arranged to discuss the airline’s operations and opportunities for collaboration.

Anguilla is preparing to open the new multimillion-dollar Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport on December 15, a few days before the first AnguillAir flight is scheduled to take off.

With 7,000 seats committed to Anguilla in its inaugural season, BermudAir emphasised the strength of the Boston market and discussed the potential of adding additional routes.

It also promised to roll out cultural touches similar to what was implemented on BermudAir — region-specific drinks and treats and employment of locals as cabin crew.
