Salvation Army and Bacardi battle food insecurity
Bacardi Ltd has again teamed up with the Salvation Army to support Bermudians facing hardship, serving hot meals at the charity’s North Street Citadel in Hamilton.
The event marked the fourth year of the spirits company’s 250 Holiday Meals initiative. Company volunteers helped dish holiday favourites prepared by Soul Food Grill and Café, with desserts donated by employees.
The effort comes as the Salvation Army reports a sharp increase in demand. The charity is now assisting about 800 people each week, a rise driven by broader economic pressures. The public has been urged to support the Army’s Christmas fundraising campaign to help close the gap.
Salvation Army officials said: “Bacardi’s continued partnership is a vital source of hope for those we serve. As food insecurity and housing instability rise across Bermuda, it is heartening to witness corporate citizens like Bacardi step forward. These meals do more than feed — they uplift.”
Douglas Mello, managing director of Bacardi International Ltd, said the initiative reflects the company’s longstanding ties to the island. “Our commitment to the Bermuda community is unwavering, and it’s an honour to support the Salvation Army’s tireless efforts, especially at a time when demand for their services has never been higher.”
The Salvation Army is appealing for donations of canned goods and other shelf-stable items, including milk, oatmeal and tea, as well as financial contributions. Items can be dropped off at the North Street Citadel from Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm.
