Retail Sales Index lower in July
After adjusting for the retail sales rate of inflation, measured at 1.6 per cent in July, the overall volume of Retail Sales Index decreased 1.5 per cent when compared to July 2024.
During July 2025, four of the seven sectors recorded year-over-year decreases in their sales volume and value indices.
Motor vehicle and gasoline sales were the only categories that saw a marked year-over-year increase in volume and value in the just released Retail Sales Index figures for July.
According to the report sent by the Government Department of Statistics, motor vehicle stores sales volume increased by 25.7 per cent, while the sales volume of service stations increased 3.4 per cent.
Retail sales increased to an estimated $117.3 million in value, representing a 0.2 per cent increase year on year.
Excluding Sundays, there were 26 shopping days, one fewer than in July 2024.
Food stores saw a fractional upward trend in volume, and no change in value.
Building material stores saw a 4.3 per cent decline in volume, while apparel stores had a decline in volume of sales of 5.9 per cent.
Overseas declarations decreased by 12 per cent compared to the same period last year. This followed a decrease of 16.2 per cent in June.
The dip was said to be due to decreases in the importation of printed materials, photographic, cinematographic and surgical equipment and orthopaedic appliances.
However, imports by households via sea increased $0.4 million to $10.3 million.
This was attributed to an increase in the importation of furnishings, works of art, vehicles and electrical machinery.
Declarations at the airport by returning residents increased $0.2 million to $4.5 million, while imports at the Bermuda Post Office remained the same at $0.5 million.
