A fourth-generation family business with roots in Bermuda’s tourism sector is marking 75 years of continuous operation on the island.

The Kitson Group of Companies celebrated the milestone with a special anniversary event for current and former staff at the Rosedon Hotel, one of its flagship properties.

Founded in 1947, the Hamilton-based group has evolved from its early focus on real estate and insurance into a diversified portfolio spanning commercial real estate, hospitality, retail and flexible office space. Today, the group operates the Rosedon Hotel and Huckleberry Restaurant, and is the majority shareholder in Gorham’s hardware store. This year, the group launched Altura Workspaces in Hamilton.

The business was established by Commander Geoffrey Kitson, who came to Bermuda with the Royal Navy in the late 1930s. The company was formalised in 1950 and expanded steadily through the decades, including the purchase of the Rosedon Hotel in 1955 and the later launch of Bermuda Island Cruises, insurance services and retail ventures.

The Kitson family has remained closely involved throughout the company’s history. Kirkham Kitson, the chairman, represents the second generation, while his son Scott Kitson later served as president and chief executive after joining the business in 1991. The company is now in its fourth generation, with family members holding leadership roles across its operations.

Lee Petty, creative director, said the anniversary prompted reflection on the company’s longstanding ties to its staff and community.

“Many of my favourite memories revolve around our children growing up in and around the Kitson businesses and our dedicated staff, who became like extended family,” she said.

Greg Soares, company president, said the longevity of the business was unusual.

“Very few family businesses survive two generations, let alone four,” he said. “The Kitson family’s commitment to Bermuda, their employees and their values has been key to that success.”
