Strykz Bowling Lounge lanes get upgrade
A familiar St David’s hangout is rolling into the new year with a calmer atmosphere, faster resets and a more modern feel.
Strykz Bowling Lounge has completed a series of upgrades to its bowling facility, replacing lanes and equipment that had been in service for more than three decades and installing new technology aimed at improving both safety and energy efficiency.
The Southside Road venue, owned by Philip Bailey Jr since 2013, has fitted its lanes with a “state-of-the-art” 120-volt string pinsetter system, installed by a three-person team from US Bowling Corp. The upgrades also include new ball returns and updated computer software.
Mr Bailey said the improvements to the ball return system were a key focus. The new system includes sensors that detect hands placed inside the return or prolonged inactivity, triggering an automatic shut-off and standby mode. “It’s safer for players and it conserves energy at the same time,” he said.
According to US Bowling Corp, the pinsetter, in which the pins are lowered on strings rather than by traditional mechanical means, has less than 80 moving parts, as opposed to traditional pinsetters that contain thousands. That makes it less likely to break and easier to service, the company said.
The new pinsetter system brings a range of behind-the-scenes improvements that bowlers may not see but will feel. A smart diagnostics system provides real-time updates on machine status for operators. A “gentle touch” detangling feature minimises strain on the strings, extending their life span and keeping play smooth, and a smart door system is designed to eliminate pin jams and cut downtime.
Strykz said the upgrades are part of a broader push to refresh the venue’s offerings. Early next year, the bowling lounge plans to add two new arcade games and to invite local companies to form teams for winter and summer bowling leagues.
The venue remains open Thursday through Sunday, with late-night hours on Fridays and Saturdays, and continues to offer food, a full-service bar and entertainment alongside its lanes.
Mr Bailey said the goal is to keep Strykz competitive as a social and recreational option. “We want people to come in and feel the difference right away,” he said.
