Restaurant renovations to revive Bulli Social

Overhaul under way: years after it closed down, Bulli Social on Queen Street is undergoing renovations (Photograph by Jessie Moniz Hardy)

After years of closure a Hamilton restaurant is preparing to reopen.

Public planning documents still refer to 7 Queen Street as Bulli Social and give permission for a retractable roof extension over the patio on the northern side of the building, the addition of a bar area and the covering of windows.

The application was first filed in November 2024.

Restaurant owners also have permission to carry out repairs to gas lines, plumbing, electrical and the roof, among other things.

The renovations are being overseen by Seymour Barclay of Barclay’s Construction.

Mr Barclay told The Royal Gazette the owners were not yet ready to release information about the project, including their own identities.

A permit from the Corporation of Hamilton for safety siding around the back patio during construction expires on May 26, 2026.

Planning permits did not reveal the identity of those carrying out the changes.

Jonny Roberts and Tyler Nearon took over the old Lemon Tree Restaurant in 2016, transforming it into Bulli Social. The eatery was known for its burgers and garden setting. It shut around the time of the pandemic.

Mr Roberts told The Royal Gazette he had cut his involvement with Bulli Social before it closed and was not involved with today’s project.

There are rumours circulating Hamilton’s restaurant community that the newly renovated eatery will serve Lebanese food.
