The e-bike industry is booming in Bermuda, as evidenced by this week’s police crackdown on the use of the electric-powered vehicles in contravention of the traffic code.

Dr EV, the business that rents, sells and repairs e-bikes has expanded so much, it has taken over a second location a couple of doors away from its Flatts Village shop, as it houses an expanding line of electric vehicles for sale.

Luke Lindo began the operation as a mobile repair business, but opened a storefront nearly two years ago that rents, sells and repairs e-bikes, together with other electric vehicles.

At the time, he noted the lack of competition in the e-bike repair business. He has steadily added the growing list of e-vehicles he has for sales and service.

Meanwhile, a police statement indicative of the increase in e-bike useage warned that in light of the growing concern about dangerous riding, they will target offenders engaged in speeding, careless riding, riding without due care and attention and failure to obey traffic signals or stop signs.

Mr Lindo said: “There has been a rise in e-bike useage including kids’ bikes as the e-motors have been exploding. That has to do with the electric motorcycles and dirt bikes.

“A lot of people are using them and they are needing more servicing.

“Originally when I started out in the smaller shop, I was more focused on e-bikes and then it started growing into the e-motos. I needed more space to work on these bikes.

“That was a bottleneck for me at that point, and so eventually I had my sights on a bigger, better location where I could service these larger bikes.

“I happened to find this location in Flatts, just up the road from my original shop. It’s more suitable for my needs and when it became available I jumped on it.”

He said that when he first opened the original shop in Flatts, he was overwhelmed with business, as word spread quickly.

Mr Lindo said: “EV is the way of the future. Battery repairs is a whole new segment to my business. E-bike servicing and repairs could branch off to golf cart repairs.”

He believes the golf cart market is viable and is continuing his inquiries. He said the electric vehicle market employs remarkably similar serviceable schemes.

Mr Lindo has a primary focus on the micro-mobility business, including mobility scooters and the conversion kits to transform pedal cycles into electric bikes.
