Journi, the taxi app launched this year by the Bermuda Taxi Owners and Operators Association, has been appointed official transport partner of Cup Match.

At next week’s Cup Match, Journi will have on-site booking and transportation desk, dedicated transportation coordination, digital taxi booking, cashless payment options and support for residents and visitors travelling to and from Somerset Cricket Club.

In a statement, Journi added that it would introduce a special seven-day driver trial to help increase the number of licensed taxis available during one of Bermuda's busiest travel periods.

Journi’s partnership comes amid growing innovation and competition in a sector in which rival app Hitch, the Ride.bm app operated by Central Dispatch, and the ridesharing programme launched by the Government last month are also providing broader options for consumers seeking transport.

Journi was launched in May, and designed to connect taxi drivers, customers and businesses on a taxi operator-owned platform.

Passengers, according to the app’s website, are able to reserve, pay for and track rides through the app.

The Hitch app has been operating in Bermuda for more than a decade and links customers directly to drivers. Ride.bm was launched in November 2024, built on Bermuda Central Dispatch’s established service through the 295-4141 phone number.

The launch of the ridesharing service was designed to create extra transport capacity to ease the strain on the taxi industry, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Owen Darrell, the transport minister, revealed in the House of Assembly last Friday that from its launch on June 10 until July 15, the ridesharing programme recorded 1,466 rides — an average of around 41 rides per day during its first five weeks.

To participate, drivers must hold a public service vehicle licence. To date, approximately 100 applications have been submitted and around 30 applicants have been approved, with the remaining applications continuing to move through the required review and processing stages.

Only if a request for a ride cannot be handled by an available taxi driver is it offered to a rideshare driver.
