Sister act: ‘dangerously delicious’ cookies on the menu
Sisters Chaella Bradshaw-Douglas and Osheah Douglas are former winners of the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation’s Rocket Pitch competition.
Chaella won in 2018 for an idea she had about putting healthy snack vending machines in schools.
Four years later, younger sister Osheah won the same competition with a healthy snack baking business plan.
Now the sisters have put their heads together to form cookie business Bon Appetite.
Starting October 13, their products will be sold on the Sargasso delivery app, Tuesday through Saturday from 6.30pm to 10.30pm.
Their motto is: “Fresh out of the oven; dangerously delicious.”
“We started doing custom orders last year,” said Chaella, 25. “It was mostly for friends and family.”
For the past six months, the sisters have been doing extensive recipe testing, baking different recipes and sharing samples with friends and family.
“Osheah has become a popular person,” Chaella laughed.
They started baking years ago with their grandmother, Rose Marie Douglas.
When she died in 2021 the sisters became interested in healthy baking, because their grandmother had had diabetes.
Their business brand has evolved since then.
“Now, our goal is to take classic treats and keep them classic,” said Osheah, 15. “Instead of following the trends, we have our signature cookies, and we want them to feel like home. We want them to feel traditional.”
Their two most popular offerings are signature chocolate chunk — a classic cookie with Swiss chocolate, chocolate chips, sea salt, and brown butter, and red velvet Oreo — a mix of a cookies-and-cream, Oreo cookie and red velvet.
As the head chef, Osheah handles the hands-on baking side of Bon Appetite, while Chaella handles operations and administration, including registration and inventory.
They work together on recipes, sometimes baking as many as 200 cookies a week. Quantities vary depending on how busy the day is. Their process separates dough preparation from baking, so orders can be baked fresh that evening.
Entrepreneurship has taught Osheah time-management skills.
“I have to make sure that I leave enough time for the business, but also for myself,” she said.
The CedarBridge Academy student is saving some of the money earned from the business to buy her first motorcycle when she turns 16.
Her ultimate goal is to study marine biology.
“I have done a lot of different things working with animals,” she said.
As a junior volunteer with the Bermuda Zoological Society, she was part of a group of students who went to Borneo this summer.
Whatever she does in the future she wants to continue baking.
Meanwhile, Chaella is an administrator.
“My background is in business and entrepreneurship,” she said. “I do paperwork for other businesses. The dream for me is to manage a few local businesses and be able to have flexibility to just manage them from home.”
They recently provided baked goods for a private event at Wahoo’s Bistro & Patio in St George. They will also be selling cookies at a Hallowe’en 5K walk/run at Amber’s Wings, a charity in Southampton providing equine-assisted therapy.
Prices range from $5 for a single large gourmet cookie, $10 for a bag of mini cookies to $20 for a signature box of cookies.
They are also exploring diabetic-friendly options.
