Scott Barnes in tug-of-war as two top teams try to sign him

Podium delight: Scott Barnes, right, who claimed a second-place finish in the Shifter Masters class and third overall in the L206 Masters class of the Roc Cup USA Florida Winter Tour in Miami

Scott Barnes has a big decision to make with two teams keen to secure his services for some prestigious upcoming races.

The Bermudian karter has driven for Ohio-based Magic Kart USA for the last three years but now has the option of joining Maranello Kart USA after securing podium finishes on his first outing for them on the Roc Cup USA Florida Winter Tour at the AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex.

“I’ve been really happy with the last three years with Magik, but Maranello have spoken about wanting to keep me on and so I may have a big decision to make,” said Barnes, who will have to decide on his future ahead of competing in the Skusa Pro Tour Winternationals in Orlando next month and the Stars Championship Series starting in Charlotte in April.

“I’m hoping on competing in both the Skusa Pro Tour and Stars Championship Series, so I have decisions to make before that.”

Barnes, 39, claimed a second-place finish in the Shifter Masters class and third overall in the L206 Masters in Miami after winning the Shifter Masters title in the Skusa Winter Series at the same venue seven days earlier

Such was Barnes’s consistency, he did not finish outside of the top three throughout the weekend, placing second in all three heats and third in the pre-final of the Shifter class, while also claiming two third-place finishes and a second in the heats, and third in the pre-final of the L206 class.

“Overall I was really happy with how the weekend went,” said Barnes. “I had hoped that I could come here and get my first victory in this series, but I could not quite there.

“There was a really competitive field of fast drivers who had competed at the track before and so overall I was happy with how I raced.

“In the L206, the top three drivers were all from the same team and so that made it even harder for me. They all tried to work together, but I managed to break them up on the podium.

“It was really pleasing to be able to disrupt the order a bit. I was up against guys that I have raced before and so I was really pleased to be able to come in and show that I have that speed.

“Some of them knew of me previously, but it was good to be able to show what I can do and get some strong results. To finish with two overall podium places from the weekend was great.”

As well as his delight at getting on to the podium, the weekend also provided Barnes with great encouragement in his first outing racing for Maranello Kart USA.

“I’ve always wanted to compete in this series, but my team of the last three years [Magik Kart USA] do not do this series,” he added.

“I spoke to Maranello and they invited me to come out and race for them. The kart was great all weekend and so I was really pleased to be able to put them on the podium in two classes.”
