Luis Martins and Andy Stoneham unharmed after crash

Luis Martins and Andy Stoneham capsize

Luis Martins and Andy Stoneham walked away unscathed after capsizing their catamaran at the Thunder on Cocoa Beach in Florida last weekend.

The local pair’s twin-engined 32ft Doug Wright catamaran, S12 Nuff Said, flipped on the sixth lap of the Super Stock race, which brought the race to a halt as safety personnel came to their aid on the race course.

Fortunately the pair were unharmed during the American Power Boat Association’s offshore racing season opener.

Representing Bermuda in the same race were David Selley and Steven Bridges, who were thankful to see their compatriots emerge from their ordeal unscathed.

“I am glad S12 Nuff Said crew were OK and only had minimal damage to the boat,” throttleman Bridges told The Royal Gazette.

Driver Selley added: “I am glad everyone is OK and I am sure they will be at the next race ready to go.”

Bridges and Selley finished sixth among the 12-strong fleet in their 32-foot twin-engined catamaran, S25 Team Bermuda.

After all was said and done on the water, Bridges was far from happy with the outcome.

“Disappointed with S25 result as it’s the first time we’ve finished behind the position where we started outside of DNF’s,” he said.

“We had to put new windows in the boat during the off season, which added weight to the boat, so calculating the new running weight will be a challenge for awhile.”

Selley cited weather conditions as a factor in the team’s performance.

“Every race is different, and the weather changed from the testing in the morning to the race in the afternoon,” he said.

The team of Gary Ballough and Cole Leibel were declared winners of the Super Stock race, which never resumed after Martins and Stoneham’s incident.

Bridges and Selley did the island proud last year after finishing third in the Super Stock Class series in their first full season of racing at this level.

They managed four top-five showings, including runner-up in the APBA Offshore National Series season opener and Sheboygan Midwest Challenge in Wisconsin.

Martins and Stoneham were eleventh overall in the Super Stock class and were late additions to the series, having taken possession of their new boat towards the end of the season last September.

Meanwhile, high winds and a small craft warning forced Bermuda Power Boat Association to cancel Sunday’s racing at Ferry Reach.

The season kicked off earlier this month with B class champions Point Mart, A class rivals Shane Madeiros and Chris Marshall and D class driver Howard Ascento all racking up victories in their respective divisions.
