Steven Bridges eager to rejoin US powerboat racing circuit
Steven Bridges is champing at the bit to rejoin the Super Stock Class racing circuit in the United States.
The local professional powerboat racer has been back on island and taking advantage of an ideal opportunity to address a few problems on his 32ft twin-engined catamaran which hindered his progress at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Missouri last month.
“We had a break in between races to go over the boat here in Bermuda after we flipped it in Alabama [Guntersville Lake HydroFest],” Bridges told The Royal Gazette.
“Whilst we were able to race in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Missouri we still had many issues that needed fixing.
“Lots of hard work went into getting the boat back to race ready by Mark Selley Jr, David Selley, Jason DeCouto, Steven Flood and most especially Helder Correia and Johnson’s Marine.”
Local powerboat racing enthusiasts and curious onlookers had the rare opportunity yesterday to observe the sleek multihull boat on display outside the headquarters of PW Marine, who fall under the auspices of team sponsor Waterfront Group of Companies.
“It is nice to have the boat here on display for our sponsors to be able to see it in person,” Bridges said.
Justin Watts, the PW Marine retail manager, was thrilled to have the rare opportunity to show the boat off to the public on the company’s premises.
“It’s great having it outside and dragging customers into our store,” he said. “It’s nice to show it off and show Bermuda what we are working with.
“A lot of people are asking if it’s for sale. Unfortunately this one is not for sale, but we can get you one that is.
“We have been behind the team from day one and it’s obviously great to be a part of it.
“We originally started as a PW sponsor for the boat and now have incorporated our whole business to Waterfront Group of Companies.
“We just happen to be the marine division under the umbrella, so we get to take a little bit more credit than most of the company.
“It’s a great honour to be a part of it and represent Bermuda in different ways to encourage younger guys to get into the sport and keep it alive.
“Hopefully it brings back powerboat racing in Bermuda and makes it more exciting for Bermudians.”
Bridges and Selley did the island proud last year after finishing third in the Super Stock Class series in their first full season of racing at this level.
They managed four top-five showings, including runner-up in the APBA Offshore National Series season opener and Sheboygan Midwest Challenge in Wisconsin.
“Last year they did very, very well and hopefully we can continue the run this year,” Watts said.
Bridges’s boat is sporting a new colour scheme this year which has also drawn a lot of attention.
“Everyone likes it,” Bridges said. “They say it looks stealth and in race mode.”
