The Annual Rubis Around the Island Race has been given the green light to go ahead as planned tomorrow despite of the threat of potential thunderstorms.

The Bermuda Weather Service issued a thunderstorm advisory yesterday, with the forecast warning of potential further thunderstorms over the weekend.

However, the Bermuda Power Boat Association has decided to go ahead and stage the race as planned.

“We are moving ahead for Sunday,” Janae Nesbitt, the Bermuda Power Boat Association commodore, told The Royal Gazette.

“If anything changes, a decision will be made on Sunday at the driver’s meeting.”

Racing teams and spectators alike were forced to wait it out as the race spectacle was twice postponed because of adverse weather.

It was originally supposed to take place on August 17 but was postponed because of thunderstorms that preceded the passage of Hurricane Erin and rescheduled for August 24.

However, it was postponed once again owing to a small-craft warning issued by the weather service.

Nearly 30 entries spread across five classes have signed up for the race, which promises to be one of the most exciting in recent years with lots of contenders in the line-up.

New champions will be crowned in S and C classes, while there is no BV class this year.

Back to defend their titles are Bobby DeCosta (D class), Shane Madeiros (A class) and Phillip Raposo (B class).

Weather permitting, the main event will begin at Ferry Reach at 2pm, preceded by the model boat race (10am) and jet-ski race (12.30pm).
