Bermuda’s two teams conquered rough seas on the way to securing top-five finishes on the opening day of the Race World Offshore Key West World Championships in Florida on Wednesday.

Competing in the Super Stock class, Nuff Said and Team Bermuda finished fourth and fifth respectively among the 14-strong racing fleet in challenging conditions which claimed one boat.

In the closed cockpit of Nuff Said were driver Luis Martins and throttle man Nick Imprescia, who narrowly missed out on a podium finish.

“Great race today, almost a podium finish and overall happy with how the boat performed,” Martins told The Royal Gazette.

Imprescia is a late addition to the team and has made a seamless transition in his role.

“Nick and I worked well together,” Martins said. “I learnt a lot from him in just this one race so looking forward to learning more and getting better.”

Driver David Selley and boat owner and throttle man Stephen Bridges on-board Team Bermuda were also pleased with their performance in the trying conditions.

“Eighth to fifth so a little of positive in running today and more importantly we finished,” Bridges said.

“Hope to improve with the next two races but all in all a good day.”

Selley added: “Tough day but happy to get a top five and a lot of boats had a worse day. Looking forward to the next two races.”

The second race is scheduled for Friday with the third and final race on Sunday when boat with the highest points in each of the various classes will be crowned champion.

Team Nautical Ventures (Shawn Torrente/Matt Jamninski) won yesterday’s five-lap race with Raymarine (Cole Leibel/Gary Ballough) crossing the finish line in second and Wozencraft (Jeremy Tschida/Julian Maldonado) in third.

Drink-Kelo (Dale McEachern/Austin Blocker) fell prey to the rough seas after rolling over on the first turn which resulted in the race being restarted.

Say Less MF (Chad Rudesill/Rusty Williams) also had their day cut short after being forced to retire from the race after experiencing engine problems.
