Scott Barnes ticks off milestone with 30th championship victory
Karter Scott Barnes continues to tick off the milestones after picking up another championship in the United States.
Victory in the Rok Cup after a “flawless weekend” was the 30th championship win of Barnes’ career and one of Bermuda’s finest sporting exports admits he has had his eyes on reaching that number for a couple of years.
“It’s great to reach another milestone figure and it’s one I’ve been looking at the last couple of years,” Barnes said
“To reach 30 is pretty cool as I’ve only really done one or two series a year in the last couple of years. I’ve always picked the biggest races of the year, so to be able to compete the last couple of years in these events and win championships has been great.
“This is a huge milestone for me and something I was pushing for going into this event, so to get it done was very satisfying.”
The track at Kartplex in Florida was new to Barnes and he had to make use of his physicality as he mastered the surface on his way to victory.
“It was a pretty flawless weekend but that is because we went there early on Wednesday and Thursday to get some practice in,” Barnes said.
“We learnt fast and it was a pretty physical track, tight and with a lot of grip, which makes it real tiring. There was not a lot of room to pass and in the Shifter class there was maybe only two corners where there was an opportunity to really make a move.
“We improved through the week and had the championship wrapped up before the final day after winning both heat races and the pre-final on Saturday.”
Rounding off his weekend by winning the final, Barnes’ win came with free entry to the Rock Cup finale in Las Vegas in October.
“The champions all get free entries, free tyres, gas and fuel into the event, which takes place on Hallowe’en weekend,” he said.
“I won’t be doing Super Nats in Vegas this year and I’ll be doing something different, so it was cool to get a free entry to that. We’ll look to go and compete for a podium in that and it will be a new event for me to hopefully tick off and add to the list.”
Barnes, as ever, is thankful for support from Bermudian companies as he represents the island on the big stage in America.
“I couldn’t be doing this without Butterfield & Vallis and All Rise Bermuda,” Barnes said.
“Having their support in the last few years helps out big time. As a Bermuda-based sponsor in the US they may not be getting much out of it but for them to have confidence and faith to support me is big.
“My team out in the US, Maranello Car USA and Carlos Racing Engines, I’ve been going with them for the third year and it’s been a fun ride. I can't wait to keep it going. We've won a lot of races together the last three years and it's unbelievable to have the opportunity.
