Team Bermuda produces strong display in advance of final race

Steven Bridges and David Selley produced back-to-back podium finishes at the Clearwater Offshore Nationals in Clearwater Beach, Florida on Saturday.

The professional powerboat racers placed third in the two races contested in choppy seas in their 32ft twin-engined catamaran S25 Team Bermuda and will start the final race of the championship tomorrow from sixth position.

Boat owner and throttle man Bridges was pleased with the day’s outcome.

“Two solid third place podiums today so not bad. We are happy with it as we were off on the set-up a bit,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“The boat is together and that’s what matters going into tomorrow and the final race of the Super Stock Championship.”

Driver Selley echoed his colleague’s sentiments.

“Happy with today’s results as we managed well for what we had,” he said.

“Difficult races as we were not able to make changes between qualifying and the races banking on the weather. Look forward to tomorrow’s race.”

The pair presently top the Super Stock National Championship points standings and are heading into tomorrow’s season finale XInsurance Great Lakes Grand Prix within striking distance of clinching a maiden title.

Bridges and Selley have dominated this year’s championship, winning four races and finishing second twice.

Also flying Bermuda’s flag in the Clearwater Offshore Nationals was S12 Nuff Said, who finished fourth and ninth in the two races.

“We had a great qualifying run. We qualified seventh out of 16 boats and finished fourth in the first heat race just behind Team Bermuda,” driver Martins said.

“We started fourth in the second race as you finish your first race and finished ninth.

“We were running fairly well and then had some engine issues. We noticed we were down on power but we were not going to quit. We just ran it how it was and finished where we finished.

“The conditions were a lot rougher than what we all expected. But everyone has to race in the same water, so you set yourself up to the best you can.”

Driver Cole Leibel and throttle man Gary Ballough swept both heats from the pole in their boat S1 Raymarine.

Overall race results have yet to be confirmed.
