Team Bermuda in world champs contention heading into final
Team Bermuda are hoping to pick up where they left off in their bid for overall class honours on the final day of racing at the 2026 Offshore World Championship in Key West, Florida, on Sunday.
After a disappointing seventh-place showing in the opening race in the Super Stock class on Wednesday, driver David Selley and throttle man Steven Bridges bounced back with a superb victory in the second race on Friday to thrust themselves into the hunt for the overall title with one race remaining.
While Bridges is delighted to be in contention for honours at this stage of the championship, he is also wary of the task the team faces, especially with double points on offer in the final race of the three-race series.
“We are in a good position going into tomorrow’s race, but as it is a double points race it will be a tough one with the seventh-place finish on Wednesday,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“Team Allen S17 have two podium finishes so they are in the best place going into tomorrow’s race and no doubt they will be on their game as they always do well in Key West.
“As they say, ‘to be the best you have to win Key West, so no doubt Team Bermuda will be pushing to try and earn that title.”
Selley and Bridges will be high on confidence going into the final race on the waters off Truman Waterfront Park after leading every lap in their 32ft catamaran on the way to their first victory at this event last time out.
The island’s hopes of coming away with a world title under their belt in Key West this year now rests solely on the pair as fellow Bermuda team Nuff Said have already been eliminated from contention.
Nuff Said driver Luis Martins and throttle man Nick Imprescia won the shortened opening race but were hit with a severe lap penalty for colliding with a course buoy that dropped them down to fifteenth in the standings.
They managed a respectable sevent -place showing in the second race despite being hit by two rival boats and are now hoping to end their campaign on a brighter note.
“We are trying to win it and get a good finish,” Martins said.
“The boat is prepared and the weather is supposed to be fair. Hopefully we get a better start tomorrow and then take it from there.”
