Man to be sentenced for theft of bicycle at restaurant

A man will be sentenced next month after he admitted the theft of a bicycle from a restaurant storage room.

Jason Liburd, 50, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to trespassing on to Port-O-Call in Hamilton and the theft of a $300 bicycle.

The court heard on Monday that a chef at the Front Street restaurant parked his pedal bike inside a locked storage room on Chancery Lane that was thought to be only accessible to staff.

The chef discovered at the end of his shift that his bike had been taken and alerted his manager.

The two reviewed CCTV footage of the area, which showed a man later identified as Liburd sneak in through a side entrance to the storage room and take the bicycle.

Staff alerted police and Liburd was later arrested.

Auralee Cassidy, for the defence, told the court that her client was willing to pay compensation for the stolen bike.

Takiyah Burgess, the Crown prosecutor, said that Liburd, from Pembroke, had committed similar offences in the past and asked for a social inquiry report.

Magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered a report, released Liburd on $1,000 bail and adjourned the case until December 15.
