Three musical groups to entertain in St George this weekend
The public will be treated to music from a trio of bands at a free concert in St George this weekend.
The Bermuda Youth Orchestra, The Band and Corps of Drums of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, and The String Collective Community Orchestra will bring together 42 musicians in King’s Square.
Major Dwight Robinson, the RBR’s Director of Music, said: “All are encouraged to bring their chairs or blanket and come out to support them and enjoy an afternoon of fun tunes.
“The concert is free, but donations would be gratefully accepted and will be divided between the operating costs for the Bermuda Youth Orchestra and the Royal Bermuda Regiment fund supporting soldiers’ morale and welfare.”
Major Robinson added: “We are grateful to George Dowling, the Mayor, and the Corporation of St George for the use of their facility, the Commanding Officer of the Royal Bermuda Regiment for his permission to allow the Band and Corps of Drums to participate and the String Collective Community Orchestra for their support of the Bermuda Youth Orchestra.”
The programme will include favourites such as Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder, Celebration for Winds and Percussion, by James Swearingen and The Prayer, which was recorded by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli.
The audience was asked to wear masks and access to the area in front of the Town Hall will be controlled.
Concertgoers will be provided with hand sanitiser on entry and family groups are encouraged to remain together and to distance themselves from others.
Major Robinson said: “Managing around the Covid-19 regulations has not dampened the spirits or the enthusiasm of the musicians.
They've all taken it in their stride and have been really on side with ensuring everyone remains safe in accordance with the public health guidelines.
“It's been a challenge but we've found creative solutions.”
Major Robinson said the concert was also an opportunity for new members to join any one of the bands.
He added: “Only by awareness does there exist the opportunity to improve. The potential talent must be aware that the band or the orchestras are available to the musician to join.
“All three organisations present opportunities for musicians at a range of levels to perform and they are welcome.”
The concert will start at 3.30pm on Sunday.
