Football can't afford scandals like this

There’s been much said and written about the ‘cash for votes’ scandal currently engulfing FIFA.Last week it seems I made a few comments in this column which ruffled a few feathers at the Bermuda Football Association and I feel I need to set a few things straight.I’m not picking on anybody, or trying to defame anybody. Why would I do that? But as a former professional footballer, a player and coach of the Bermuda national team, I have the right to speak up.I’m certainly not the type to sit on the fence. I’ve played the game at the highest level and it hurts me to see it being destroyed. This whole mess that FIFA finds itself in is terrible for football, particularly the Caribbean region of which the scandal is centred on.I just don’t want to see Bermuda affected, that’s all.For those of you who haven’t been following the scandal, here’s a quick reminder: It’s alleged cash bribes, $40,000 offered to each Caribbean nation, were made at last month’s CFU special summit in Trinidad attended by the BFA.It’s been reported that Bahamas led the whistle-blowing by alerting Concacaf general secretary Chuck Blazer of the bribes, which were allegedly offered by FIFA executives Mohamed Bin Hammam and Jack Warner.Bermuda and a handful of other associations have supported Bahamas’ claims and at least two other countries (Puerto Rico and Suriname) have handed the money back. This week Bermuda were one of only five Caribbean countries to agree to meet with FIFA’s investigators, which is a good thing. If you haven’t been involved there shouldn’t be any problem talking to the investigators. That’s the right thing to do you can’t just avoid doing it.It’s a tough situation to be in. No country in their right mind wants to be involved in this sort of stuff. For those that have done wrong by accepting the money, well, I just hope they learn from it.We can’t afford to have these things involved in football. It’s a shame this is happening in our region and it gives you an indication of some of the things have gone on in the past.Let’s call it as we see it, there has been stuff like this happening in our region for years. Let’s clean it up and do the right thing.Someone has to take responsibility for what’s happening in our region because we need to cut it out. It’s going to be interesting to see what develops over the next month. I just hope football ends up the winner.
