Surprise Championship League final good for football

Only a betting man would have picked Chelsea and Bayern Munich as the two finalists for this year’s Champions League, but what has transpired is good for football. Many would have loved to have seen old rivals, Real Madrid and Barcelona, lock horns again for the biggest trophy in club football, but their two conquerors are deserving of their place.Bayern Munich beat Madrid and will be the hosts for the final in their own stadium and be able to showcase their talent at home.Chelsea did their job and with commitment and dedication they showed over the two legs that you don’t have to play flamboyant football to beat Barcelona. The key to getting the win against Barca, whose passing game is better than any team, is to close down all channels and avenues.Chelsea rode their luck for the two legs but in the end fortune favours the brave. They only had a handful of chances on goal and took all of them.To go to the Camp Nou and score two goals, and be down a man, is incredible. You deserve to win.Barca fans must be hugely disappointed but the game can be cruel. The players can only blame themselves. When you have all the possession and don’t score then it tells you that what you’re doing isn’t going to work and you need a plan B.They came up against a team that was well drilled and play a very physical style of football. They had more than enough of the play but sometimes you have to mix it up. Chelsea’s defence was always going to be hard to break down.Didier Drogba showed why he is so important to the club, playing as the lone striker and demanding two defenders to mark him which leaves someone else open.Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of the best players in the world, both missed penalties that would have changed the games. As Messi approached his penalty he didn’t look confident against big keeper Petr Cech. All Messi had to do was hit the target and he would have scored. We have seen him score all sorts of goals but this was one chance really would want to have back.Ronaldo also has a knack of missing the vital ones. You only need to go back to Manchester United playing Chelsea in the final a few years back and he missed a penalty then. Both sides will need to learn from this. Penalties are a part of the game and need to be practised. The Germans, like the Italians and Brazilians, are normally cool as ice when it comes to a shoot-out and you knew Bastian Schweinsteiger was going to score.* * * *The Manchester derby is on Monday and the team that shows the most courage will come out on top. The onus will be on City because they need the points but United haven’t had the best of times at the Etihad Stadium, so the game it is setting up nicely. If City want to win the league they need to win. It’s a simple as that.
