The Dutch have been the biggest disappointment

Well, the 20102 European Championships are little more than a week old and already there’s been quite a few upsets.Holland, one of the pre-tournament favourites, have got themselves into a real mess after losing to Denmark and Germany and are going to have to conjure up something special against Portugal. We all know just how easy on the eye the Dutch can be but they just haven’t seemed to find their feet at this tournament. Losing to Denmark in a game they really should have won has cost them dearly and to be honest I think Bert van Marwijk got his tactics wrong. Both the Danes and the Germans punished the Dutch for their arrogance because sometimes I think their players believe they just have to turn up to win. Neither team were afraid of Holland and both had a game plan to beat van Marwijk’s under performing side. They are really up against it now and have to demolish Portugal to stand any chance of going through. Sure, the Dutch can’t play any worse than they have so far in this tournament but I just can’t see that happening.Van Marwijk will shuffle his selection but in my opinion it will be a case of too little too late. From what I’ve seen so far, Germany and Spain look to be the standout sides although I’ve been greatly impressed with Russia who are playing with a hunger and intensity about them.I felt a bit sorry for Ireland who are in a really tough group and have come up short against Croatia and Spain. I’d like to see them get a result against Italy and give their fans something to cheer about but again, that’s unlikely.Italy will need to win that game having drawn against Croatia and Spain and they are always a difficult team to break down.I know many England fans were dismayed by the way their team played against France but people need to remember they have a new coach and I think Roy Hodgson got his tactics spot on.England look like they will be tough to break down and after beating Sweden yesterday I think they are in a good position to go through. They have some enthusiastic young players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Danny Welbeck, which can only bode well for the future.I’ve been impressed with one or two of the unknown players for the so-called lesser teams who have shown they can produce against the best.I’m sure some of the younger guys from nations like Croatia, Russia, Ukraine and the Czech Republic will earn some big money moves if they keep performing.
