It’s cricket season people! Cricket is my favourite sport. I love it and yes, I miss playing. I miss coaching too. But county cup is first for me. The Eastern Counties Cup Competition is soon to begin and whilst I am hoping for three good matches, I would be remiss if I didn’t wish my team, Cleveland County Cricket Club, good luck. Cup Match is also around the corner and I encourage fans to take in all the cricket, all the culture, all the fun, support the competitions and have yourselves a grand old summer. I’ll now send a shout out to my Cup Match Team, St George’s, in the hope that they retain their trophy! More on this after the top 20.Holding it down at #1 is Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jespen, easily the cutest song we’ve heard in a while. Immovable at #2 is Wild Ones by Flo-rida featuring Sia. This is a high energy track that fills dance floors and makes you sing along.Still at #3 is Birthday Cake by Rihanna and Chris Brown. You have to check out this song. I love the beat. Whoever produced it gets mad kudos because the beat is just banging. Improving to #4 is Rihanna’s other hit, Where Have You Been? Yet another chart-topper from the reigning Queen of Pop. Get over it haters.Falling to #5 is Starships by Nikki Minaj. Slipping to #6 is Glad You Came, one of the hottest pop/dance tracks on the planet, by The Wanted. On the way up at #7 is Titanium by David Guetta featuring Sia, a former essential new dance tune. Dropping one space to #8 this week is Boyfriend by Justin Bieber.Up to #9 is Climax by Usher, a typically steady and consistent pop track which has a variety of remixes to satisfy everyone. Tumbling to #10 it’s Give Me All Your Luvin’ by Madonna featuring Nikki Minaj and MIA. Down to # 11 is Dance Again by Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull. Tumbling to #12 is the hot dance track by Chris Brown and Rihanna — Turn Up The Music. See what I mean? Her songs and her presence are everywhere; at the top of the chart, middle of the chart. Her face is on magazines, billboards and her songs on radio stations, websites and in nightclubs everywhere worldwide, even in cyberspace. She is IT right now.Improving to #13 is Cheater’s Prayer by Christopher Martin. Up to #14 is the crossover dancehall hit She Doesn’t Mind by Sean Paul. On the way up to #15 is Link Up by Destra, a soca hit. Slipping to #16 is The Motto by Drake featuring L’il Wayne. Falling to #17 is Take Care by Rihanna and Drake.New at #18 is Wide Awake by Rihanna’s ace girl in the industry, Katy Perry. This one has quickly raced up the charts. In at #19 is one of the most versatile and creative tracks I’ve heard in a while, Mercy, by Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T, 2 Chainz. This track is quite interesting and takes a few surprisingly creative turns. But that’s typical of Kanye West. He may be a little weird; but he is very creative with his music. Good luck with the crazy and self-centred Kim Kardashian dude. Another interesting new track is Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye featuring Kimbra, which enters at #20.Now back to this week’s topic: cricket season. Cricket is a gentleman’s game. It’s my favourite sport and Bermuda offers so much of it at a very good standard each summer. The county games are a lot of fun. I remember as a little boy I couldn’t wait to go to the matches. Then there’s Cup Match. I was born on a Cup Match Thursday back in 1964, so it probably stands to reason that I would love cricket, Cup Match, County Cup and of course Bermuda in the summer. The summer in Bermuda is probably the best time of year. Cricket is a huge part of our history, our heritage and our culture and I sense a little bit of a departure from this part of our heritage. It is my hope that all of the cricket competitions will be successful this year, because it all helps to develop our cricket programme, which has kind of fallen from grace. Where we once made the ICC World Cup, we struggle nowadays. But fret not, help is on the way. We simply have to keep trying, keep practising, keep playing and never, never, never, give up. It worked for Sir Winston Churchill and it can work for our cricket programme.I encourage Bermudians to come out and support the games. Bring your families, especially young children, to expose them to this cultural experience from an early age. Make it a family tradition. Here’s to an amazing summer of cricket! Peace………..DJLT!
