Gombey Warriors are us – all of us
Bermuda, with a population of just 60,000 and a landmass of 21 square miles, stands as one of the smallest countries in the Atlantic and Caribbean region. Jamaica, by comparison, boasts more than 4,400 square miles and three million people. Yet, despite these differences, we dared to compete and we made it to the final stages of World Cup qualifying — a feat that deserves recognition.
Yes, we are disappointed by the outcome of our games. However, let us not lose sight of what truly matters. We are in a time when some of our youth are making wrong choices. There is zero justification for what we have witnessed as of late.
On the other hand, the majority of our young people are making the right choices in life, education and in sport. So, for those who choose to represent our country on regional and international stages in different sports, we must stand behind them 200 per cent. They are choosing discipline, teamwork and national pride.
No matter the score when the final whistle is blown, they are our sons, nephews, cousins. Their courage and commitment reflect the spirit of Bermuda, and they deserve our loudest applause.
Let us be overtly supportive of these young ambassadors. Their journey is not just about winning; it’s about showing what is possible when small nations dream big. More importantly, it is a reminder that society has to support them all along the way to their next phase in life.
Our footballers’ courage and commitment over the course of the tournament reflect the spirit of Bermuda, and they deserve our support at each upcoming game.
The Gombey Warriors are us — all of us.
