Tucked away behind the BAA gym at the round-about on Serpentine Road is a little gem that has been providing Bermuda with a very unique product for around 10 years - handcrafted pottery from around the world. Better known to most as “Lots of Pots,” Unicas Bermudas is operated by husband and wife team, Deborah Lombardo and Nathan Worswick and is managed my Scott Stewart.

Their specialty is importing unique pottery from various parts of the world in an open-market atmosphere, most notably from, Mexico and Vietnam. However, unlike other stores that may order items through a catalogue, each item sold at Lots of Pots was hand-selected by Mr. Worsick himself who has over 30 years’ experience as a buyer of handcrafted items.

He makes two trips every year to Mexico, which has a long history in pottery making. He also makes regular visits to many other places, including Vietnam, Bali and Guatemala, to select the items that are sold at the market.

“If you go to the States, you won’t find as much variety,” Mr. Worswick explained of the selection on offer.

He also boasts that it was Lots of Pots that first introduced the now popular chimineas to the Island The company receives two big shipping containers a year, in the spring and fall, to prepare for the summer gardening season and the Christmas holidays. Their current stock includes a wide variety of Talavera brightly-coloured, Mexican pottery, plates and other items that have their artistic roots in Morrocco and Spain.

In addition to the many large pots, perfect for outdoor use, Lots of Pots is also offering four tables filled with gift items, as well as a wide selection of wall art, including hand-blown glass vases made of recycled glass from Mexico. This glassware is sometimes known as “Bubble Glass,” for the tiny bubbles and imperfections that can be seen, adding to its unique style.

The wide selection of chimneas, which all arrived recently, hail from Mexico and are crafted by an artisan named Francisco, whom Mr. Worsick discovered only last year.

You can also discover unique pottery created in Lombok, Indonesia. Available in rich, earthly tones, the bowls and other items can only be made in the dry season as it is fired with rice straw.

Unlike Mexico, the history of pottery making in Vietnam only goes back about 30 years.

“The Vietnamese were not really familiar with pottery making,” Mr. Worsick explained.

After the end of the Vietnam War, representatives from the United Nations recommended adding pottery to the list of things Vietnam could do to rebuild their nation. As a result, they now produce some of the most beautiful pieces anywhere.

Finally, there is a newly added selection of small, kilim and cut-pile handwoven rugs from the Middle East, as well as a number of pieces of handcrafted jewellery With items hailing from around the globe, you would expect the items on sale to be expensive, but, in fact, said Mr. Worsick, there are items to fit every budget, ranging in price from $5 to $500.

“BAA has been a good landlord for us,” Mr. Worsick said. “That is reflected in our prices. Because our overheads are low, we can sell at a reasonable cost.”

Lots of Pots has a very dedicated clientele and has relied on referrals for much of its business, but are excited to see the business continue to grow.

“We continue to be the leader in pottery,” Mr. Worsick said.

Lots of Pots is located at the corner of Woodlands and Serpentine Roads. It is open from 12pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday, and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays.
