Jamila helps with the regulation of funds

Jamila L. Simmons is a member of the Investment Team that regulates the Bermuda registered mutual funds, which has been authorised under the new Investment Funds Act 2006.

On an average day Ms Simmons’ job is hectic, but pleasurable.

“I review applications submitted from law firms and fund administrators seeking approvals for changes to the Fund Prospectus as outlined in the Act,” she explained.

“I am responsible for ensuring that these funds are in compliance with the Act.”

Ms Simmons also works on fund related projects and provides compliance letters to international regulators who are seeking information on Bermuda authorised funds.

“In accordance with the newly enacted legislation, fund administrators seeking to conduct business in Bermuda are required to become licensed by the Bermuda Monetary Authority,” she told The Royal Gazette.

“Going forward, my department will also be responsible for reviewing the license applications and conducting onsite reviews of the fund administration firms.

She is tremendously pleased with the new facility and expressed her views on the move, highlighting the difference between the new BMA building and the former offices.

“The new BMA House has an inviting and fresh new look that makes the working environment more comfortable,” stated Ms Simmons.

“It is definitely a vast improvement from our former office. I like the fact that everyone is now in one building.”

At just 31 years old, Ms Simmons has only worked at the BMA for six months, but has admitted her time at the Authority has already been a significant learning experience.

Previous to coming on board with the BMA, she held a position with the Bank of Bermuda (HSBC) in the Alternative Funds Services Division where she worked for six years in the Investor Services Department.

Her qualifications include a Bachelors of Commerce Degree and she is currently considering two further professional designations that she aims to achieve in the near future.
