It is the small things that count
Bermuda Maritime Museum curator Elena Strong is her only daughter and when asked about her fondest memory, she found it difficult to narrow it down to just one.
“Fond childhood memories include being towed on her back when I was learning how to swim, working on creative art projects and spending time with her in her vegetable garden,” said Ms Strong.
“Now as an adult, I enjoy sitting on her porch, having a giggle and talking about life in general with her.”
As a child, Ms Strong says her mom did all sorts of things to make them feel special when they were growing up.
She explained: “I have a twin brother and an older brother and she has always made us feel equally special.
“She has given us all so much in terms of love, affection, opportunities to pursue our interests and guidance in education, career and life.
“However, it is the small things such as a hug, a smile and a word of encouragement that makes me feel special.”
Last Mother’s Day was the first time for over a decade that she and her siblings were all on-Island to celebrate with their mother.
“Last year my brothers and I took her out to lunch at Café Gio in St. George’s along with my stepfather and his mother.
“It was the first time in about 12 years that all her children were together on Mother’s Day.
“When I was living off the Island I would call and send a card or flowers, however, I would always get confused with, which Mother’s Day date to celebrate: the American or the British Mother’s Day (Mothering Sunday in March)!”
According to Ms Strong, Mrs. Winchell, does not really have a favourite saying or adage.
“But she has a positive outlook on life that filters into everything that she does and says.
“She treats everyone with respect and kindness and I try to follow her example.”
