THE Bank of Bermuda's new flagship offices could be open for business by the spring of 2008.

Construction of the seven-storey structure, on the site of the former Trimingham's store on Front Street, is expected to begin in January subject to planning approval and will take just over two years to complete.

Speaking prior to holding a public forum on the development last night, Bank of Bermuda CEO Phillip Butterfield said the project "reaffirmed the bank's commitment to the community".

And he added that the new structure was a step forward in giving Hamilton "the look and feel of capital cities in other parts of the world".

Mr. Butterfield (pictured in file photo) stressed that transparency and public consultation were key factors in how the project had developed.

But he added that there were practical consideration that the bank had to meet in creating an efficient and healthy environment for employees. While the design retains some of the traditional elements of the iconic Front Street property, and includes a walkway and public art displays, the upper levels will be clad in a modern structure to accommodate bank staff.

"We are bringing new ideas to the table while meeting our responsibilities as a good corporate citizen," Mr. Butterfield said.

"What we are planning to do is have a facility that will not only be a statement on the landscape of Front Street, but also a positive statement for Bermuda."

Mr. Butterfield also confirmed plans for the refurbishment of the bank's Church Street branch, saying: "It will be a significant departure in terms of layout."
