Charity launches fresh assault on housing crisis
A CHARITY set up to provide shelter in Third World countries ravaged by civil war and natural disasters is launching a fresh assault on Bermuda?s housing crisis.
Habitat for Humanity International was set up 30 years ago with the aim of building affordable housing throughout the world. Since then the non-profit organisation has built more than 200,000 homes across Africa, Asia and parts of Europe.
And the Bermuda branch of the organisation is linking up with religious groups across the island this Sunday in a bid to build more affordable homes.
A spokesman for the charity said: ?Habitat for Humanity Bermuda will be working with the religious communities to gain their valuable help in building affordable homes.
?On Sunday Bermuda?s religious community will be coming together in their respective congregations on the theme of building homes through putting faith into action through all the parishes in Bermuda.
?Sermons will focus on affordable housing and the importance of helping Bermudians and residents be properly and safely housed.
?Church communities hope to use this theme to inspire people of faith to help build and be involved in fixing or building houses in their Bermuda.?
World-wide the charity is able to build simple, decent housing through volunteer labour and donations of money and materials. They are then sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no interest loans. Mortgage payments are then ploughed back in to the charity, funding further building work.
