Extros have the Silver City spirit back

SHOW the old boys from Silver City a new cup and they will go and win it. That was the scenario this season with Somerset Extros picking up the first C Division title in the restructured Commercial League.

The side made up of former Trojans stars who had won every domestic trophy in their younger days dropped just four points on the way to winning the title for the division which is strictly for the over 30s.

And while Silver City refers just as much to the hairs on their head, the old boys from the Extros are intent on seeking re-election to the Commercial B where there are no age restrictions.

It marks a remarkable turn around in the fortunes of Extros who last season struggled to get out a side.

It led to some hard-talking over the summer and a re-energised effort this season with the side even keeping regular training sessions up until Christmas.

Manager Brian Iris, who led the team to the title in his first season at the helm brought in several players, but was keen to stay true to the Trojans' old boy tradition.

It even lead to a return of former international player Donnie Simmons for the first few games.

"He was scoring goals every game. One of the things I wanted to do when I became manager was re-establish all the former Trojans who had played with Extros ? they were part of the Silver City legacy," said Iris.

Fixtures in the squad included keeper Gladstone (Old Hell) Robinson, midfielders Mike Corday, Mike Bremar and frontmen Rodney and Kent Bascome and Everett Wellman,

"They won all the cups in soccer. The older guys are still showing the younger guys how to get it done," added the manager.

Still hungry for football after the short inaugural C League season finished last month the club organised the Richard (Dirt) Simmons Trophy involving some of the other C League teams.

So far the team have a 100 percent record and are looking to go through to the finals by beating local rivals Dockyard Falcons on Saturday.

While Extros' experience have helped the capture the C Division crown, the B Division title was taken by youthful newcomers Island XI who were only formed last summer.

The side are made up of youngsters back from college who decided to turn informal kickabouts into something more structured.

They won the league at a canter and have what it takes to take the A Division crown, said coach Robert Thomas. He added: "They could go all the way into the First and the Premier. They are young guys ? 22-23 years old."

The team lost just one league game all season when they were missing key players and only fielded nine men.

Boasting the explosive pace of Olympic sprinter Xavier James, Thomas said Island XI had a simple game plan.

"We pass it around and release it to the front men who have speed."

Next year Thomas wants his team to have a good crack at the FA Cup as well as do well in the league.

"We will be the ones to watch," he warned.
