Fit teens show strikers a clean pair of heels
Striking bus and ferry drivers couldn't hold Shanae Outerbridge (left) and Denzelle Swan back on Tuesday. The pair took matters into their own hands and walked six miles to Crawl Hill from the bus terminal in Hamilton. The teens, who declined to give their ages, attend The Learning Centre and Clearwater Middle School respectively, and were unfazed by Tuesday's illegal work stoppage, a sympathy action on behalf of airport firefighters who want a collective bargaining agreement. The walk was uneventful except for an unsuccessful attempt to beg some water from a house. "We just kept on going," said Shanae. Arriving home at about 7 p.m., the girls said it would have taken them about half an hour less had they not stopped for water. "It was fun," they said. "We're not usually people who walk," explained Denzelle. "We normally only do cross-country and that's only like a quarter of that (the distance between Crawl and Hamilton)... It inspired us to go into the End-to-End (walk in May)." When asked what advice they would give to people should they find themselves in a similar situation, Shanae's reply was simple: "Don't be lazy." Denzelle was equally philosophical: "Think about the olden days," she said. "If you couldn't afford a horse and buggy you had to walk."
