French 'coaching guru' flies into Bermuda to conduct clinics
HE has coached the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Milan Baros and William Gallas.
And now acclaimed French coach Jacques Crevoisier is set to fly into Bermuda next month to conduct clinics for Bermuda's coaches and players.
Behind the move to bring in Crevoisier, who is known as a "coaching guru" in France, are the Calderon brothers ? Richard and Robert.
And these clinics are just going to be the start of a programme which will see coaches from various countries in Europe and South America visit the island in an effort to upgrade the overall standard of football in Bermuda.
"Actually this is the second of a series of not-for-profit coaching education clinics targetting youth coaches," said Richard Calderon, who like his twin brother Robert is a former Bermuda international player and currently a youth coach at Devonshire Colts.
"The clinics will be staged from February 7th to the 9th," he said adding that the initial plan is to conduct four practical sessions using two separate groups of players ? a mixture of the top 18 youth players between the ages of 12 and 15 in one group and two additional sessions using the Under-20 national team.
"The central theme throughout all sessions, which will include the tactical classroom session, will be centred around teaching systems of play," said Calderon adding, "we feel reasonably fortunate to have secured Jacques as he usually presents only elite coaching forums and his calendar is very full." Crevoisier's coaching was one of the main ingredients to France's footballing success at the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championships.
He was the advisor to France's head coach at the 1998 World Cup and dealt with the psychological aspects and management of the team and was also the head coach of France's side at the 2000 European Under 18 Championships.
Besides numerous positions with the French Football Federation, Crevoisier was also responsible for coaching education at UEFA and was the first team coach at Liverpool during much of fellow Frenchman Gerard Houllier's reign.
Calderon said: "The clinicians that we have sought come with diverse backgrounds which was critical as we not only wanted to expose Bermuda's youth coaches to cutting-edge coaching techniques, but we thought it equally important to provide various coaching philosophies.
"Derek Broadley (who was recently in Bermuda conducting clinics) brought a English Premier League Academy team (Crystal Palace) philosophy with hints of the American coaching philosophy. With the great success that the French have had in developing players it was clear that we had to pursue the best French coach that we could afford.
"Initially we were offered Gerard Houlllier, but not only was he way out of our price league, he didn't come with the youth development experience that we sought. However, he was good enough to recommend Jacques, his first team coach at Liverpool.
"Not only was he affordable, but as anyone can see on his resume, he had the requisite experience and success at the youth level."
Calderon said that after Crevoisier's clinics, they will in early March be bringing in Dr. Tudor Bompa. "He is recognised worldwide as the foremost authority on periodisation training. Tudor has coached many world class athletes including 11 Olympic medallists.
"Having created conditioning programs for Argentina's national football team and a presenter at three FIFA Congresses, we thought it would great to expose not only youth football coaches but coaches from other sports, PE teachers, certified trainers and physiotherapists to his expertise."
