Friends and ex-students remember Sid
THE late Sidney Rumbelow will be remembered by his friends, former students and colleagues in a memorial gathering tomorrow.
The event will take place at the Cathedral Hall in Church Street, Hamilton from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and all who knew the former teacher are welcome.
Mr. Rumbelow, who died two months ago at the age of 82, was a strong influence on many Bermudians in his capacity as deputy principal of Bermuda Technical Institute during the 1950s and later as principal of Churchill School.
Columnist Stuart Hayward is one of the former students of the English-born teacher who will speak at Saturday's event.
In a tribute published by the soon after Mr. Rumbelow's death, Mr. Hayward wrote: "Sid, as I came to know him, wasn't everybody's cup of tea.
"He was blunt with language and had the elegance of a boxer ? which he had been at one time. He didn't tolerate stupidity very well, but he cared deeply about developing young minds. And that's what he did for us at the Tec.
"Sid formally taught physics, technical drawing and metalwork. Informally, he taught boys to organise their thoughts and their lives, and to take and develop pride in themselves."
After his career in education, Mr. Rumbelow became an independent hotelier at Cabana.
Rick Richardson will make the opening remarks in tomorrow's gathering and Earl Hart will then present an historical tribute, followed by a Technical Institute tribute from Mr. Hayward.
A tribute from Annette Rumbelow will be followed by contributions from the audience, before delMonte Davis delivers the closing remarks.
