Antwon gets serious after being a `joker'
While many of his friends were working summer jobs and having a blast this summer, 16-year-old Antwon Morton spent seven weeks at the Florida Air Academy's military camp in Florida.
Mr. Morton, who attends the Berkeley Institute, said while he did his work at school, he did play around and was considered a "joker".
He said his mother threatened that if he did not pull up his socks she was going to send him away to military school.
"She was always giving me a lot of rules, but I didn't follow them all," he said. "She kept saying that she thought I needed more discipline, but I though I was alright."
So when the volume of complaints to his mother increased, she followed through with her threat.
He told The Young Observer: "She came home one day and said that I was leaving in a month."
And what were his first thoughts? "That I was not going," he said. But true to her word, she had her son pack his things and flew with him to Melbourne, Florida.
Mr. Morton said when he arrived there, he was not shocked at the quietness of the area, as his mother had given him a brochure so he knew what to expect.
"One of my friends was sent there as well, so it wasn't that bad," he said. But that still did not lessen his desire to return to Bermuda.
Mr. Morton said a routine day at the camp included waking up at 7 a.m. then doing a variety of activities such as football or swimming. And, he said, he got the opportunity to participate in flight classes.
"We did things like practice landing and take-offs, and how to turn the plane while in the air," he said.
While he said he learned a lot while at the camp, Mr. Morton said that he did not receive much discipline as he never got into any trouble.
"There were a few bad kids out there who cursed at the sergeants and tried to push people around us. I am not as bad as that," he said. But did he learn anything?
"I will definitely settle down and focus on school this year," he said.
