Bus crossings

Since the death of six-year-old Tyaisha Cox, there have been a number of suggestions about how such an accident could be avoided in the future.

Many of these have focused on drivers not overtaking buses while they are still disembarking their passengers.

While the Police investigation into Tyaisha's death is continuing and it is impossible to say whether or not the driver whose car was in collision with Tyaisha as she crossed the road in front of the bus was responsible or not, it is clear that this is a risky practice.

The only answer is for bus passengers to wait for the bus to leave before they attempt to use a crossing. Then they can get a clear view of the road in both directions. While it may seem to be good manners for a bus driver to wait until passengers have crossed the road, last week's tragedy shows just how risky a practice this is, regardless of whether the crossing is in front of the bus or behind it.
