Catering to your gardening needs
When it comes to gardening, whether a novice or a beginner, whatever you need — from pots and tools to manure — you can find it all at Brighton Nurseries in Devonshire. In 2003, the devastation of Hurricane Fabian left the manager of Brighton Nurseries, Eddie Simas, sceptical about the fate of his family’s business. The damage however, gave them the chance to revamp the site and construction began in February, 2005 with the completion of the new Brighton Nurseries Garden Centre and several new green houses in October, 2005.
“Everybody is happy with the change, even the staff are happy to come to work now, which is a good thing,” Mr. Simas says with a laugh.
So what has changed at Brighton Nurseries, since the new buildings went up?
“We used to facilitate mainly landscape companies, but we’re trying to facilitate the homeowner now as well,” Mr. Simas explains.
“They can come and get everything they need here. If they go to a hardware store they can only buy the tools, but if they come here they can get it all. In the future, we’d like to offer a small variety of cut flowers as well.”
When it comes to flora, Brighton Nurseries pride themselves on growing and propagating the bulk of their stock.
Since they have expanded their business, they have begun to import plants as well.
“We don’t like to import but we started to do a bit more because of the new shop,” Mr. Simas admits. “Basically perennial flowers and the like.
“We try to offer plants that will do well in Bermuda instead of offering something that won’t, as well as a host of things for different seasons.”
Their selection, while varied, is not significantly exotic, but they do offer a range of colour for gardens, and “a lot of green”.
Not just an adult past time, Brighton Nurseries has taken the younger generations interests into account: “Kids like wagons and like to help out their parents in the garden, so we also have kids gloves and tools available.”
