It's time to eat some crow. Tuesday's editorial contained an error with regard to just how many distributors of taxi equipment there are for the central dispatch service.

Two distributors, Advanced Tech Solutions and Telecom, have both been approved to provide dispatch equipment to taxi dispatchers. Under the proposed law, taxi operators would then be required to sign up with a dispatcher using the approved equipment.

So drivers who feel that they are being forced to do business with a single firm, as Tuesday's editorial stated, are misinformed, as this newspaper was. In addition, a third supplier has applied for approval.

Drivers may still be aggrieved that they are having to take on additional equipment at their own expense, but they have a choice. And under the law, this is not so different from a ship having to carry safety equipment, or to provide a certain level of service.

Indeed, many taxi drivers agree that it was a mistake when the former United Bermuda Party Government dropped the requirement for taxis to carry radios.

In all probability, the Government should put in some kind of price control mechanism so that approved suppliers and dispatch services cannot unreasonably hike the prices of the equipment or the service charges.

This does not mean that the suppliers should not start service now, rather than wait for legislation forcing the drivers to adopt it. As was stated on Tuesday, if the service is so good, taxi operators will adopt it, purely out of their own self interest.
