Disturbed by fish souvenirs
March 10, 2002
Dear Sir,
As a Bermuda resident, I am not in the habit of visiting the shops selling souvenirs on Front Street. The quality of most items associates us to the tackiest seaside resort.
However, this week I was in the Carole Holding store on Front Street and I was appalled to find the most obscene treatment of live fish in an obvious attempt to sell souvenirs.
In a display near to the back of the shop, there was a selection of bowls (which would better serve as oversized drinking glasses) with one very ornate fish in each bowl. The poor fish, with their long fins dragging along the bottom, barely had room to turn around.
Anybody can see that the unsuitable conditions have taken their toll on the health of the fish. When I asked the shop assistant about this, she stated that it was nothing to do with her.
How can people abuse living things in this way? With Bermuda crying out for more tourist, is this terrible sight the image Bermuda wants to portray?
Speak out with your feet and let Carol Holding know that we will not sop there until this horrible treatment of fish stops.
