Expert advice for brushing up on art

Airbrush techniques were the order of the day for 11 CedarBridge Academy students last week during a single session workshop with Masterworks Artist in Residence, Michael Cacy.

Mr. Cacy has been working with artists of all skill levels since he began his workshops in January.

"I'm impressed. These students are doing great and we'll be able to move on through the basics today," said, as students practised using the airbrush.

The Senior Two students are currently involved in the GCSE art programme and were joined by their art teacher, Bianca Hewson, in learning the new art form.

Ms Hewson said: "Part of the art department's objective is to work more with the community and artists within the community."

The students learned how to administer the paint evenly and how to apply the paint by focusing on where light would be reflected on the canvas.

Using a the small silver pen filled with paint the students expertly shaded in shapes for each of the assignments.

All of the paint and equipment were sent free of charge from Medea, a US-based art company so the workshop was free of charge for the students, said Mr. Cacy.

Students found inspiration in several of Mr. Cacy's pieces as they worked including a Gosling's Black Seal logo that he designed for the company's products. He also displayed artwork inspired by the light in Bermuda.

Many of the students in attendance during the workshop cited their hope to one day work in the field of art.

Rickia Outerbridge said she has always been interested in art.

She said: "I have heard other people talk about the airbrush but I never experienced it myself but now I'm learning new things.

"I'm very interested in art and at home I like to draw Chinese symbols. I spend a lot of time drawing."

Outside of her school art classes, Chakeya Ottley said she has been exposed to other mediums including sculpture.

"It's been nice to go further in to working with the airbrush," she said.

"I want to do something with art when I'm older and I'm interested in all kinds of things including sculpture."

Stephanie De Oliveira wants to put her love for art toward a career in architecture but she has also considered working with the airbrush.

"It (the airbrush) has always interested me and to see his work and what it is he's doing is really inspirational to do your best.

"This is my first time working with the airbrush but it is my favourite. I also like working with pastels. I enjoy working with anything that is easy to blend."

Mr. Cacy, an illustrator from Portland, Oregon, has visited Bermuda on many occasions over the last 20 years and says he considers the airbrush "just another paintbrush".

He will be starting another workshop at the end of the month called "Capturing the Light", which will demonstrate work in mixed media. His artwork is currently on display at Masterworks Gallery on Front Street.
